PORTLAND, Ore. — February 1, 2024 — Multnomah County Library invites the community to join in celebrating and honoring Black History Month. Visit a library location through February 29 to learn about events, book displays and activities.

This month honors the contributions of Black people in the United States. Enjoy this year’s 2024 Black History Month theme of African Americans and the Arts at your local library.

“Literacy within art is essential for our movements within communities. When we express ourselves it’s important that we accrue other forms of storytelling whether that's through visual arts, music, or performance. We have great examples of these things as we offer events at the library with this same theme,” says Israel Fin, Multnomah County Library’s Black Community Services and Engagement Coordinator.

Participate at one of the events

“If folks are coming into our libraries they’ll be welcomed by lots of hand picked staff displays of books that focus on not just Black history but the Black experience and art and music. We will have lots of events for youth and teens in our community to come in library spaces as families and participate in fun programs that center on community and belonging,” says Fin.

The library’s Black Cultural Library Advocates are ready to help find culturally relevant materials for you. Multnomah County Library offers programs and services for the Black community all-year round. Stay up to date at multcolib.org
