Sensory rooms at Multnomah County Library policy

Không có bản dịch tiếng Việt

Multnomah County Library is committed to supporting accessibility and inclusion in libraries. The library provides access to sensory rooms, stimulant-sensitive spaces, for patrons with sensory needs. Sensory rooms support accessibility and inclusion through providing a calming environment. This policy supports access and use of the sensory rooms to foster a welcoming space.

Sensory rooms are available at the following locations:

  • Midland Library, the sensory room is located in the Gathering Circle.
    • The room is kept locked. It locks from the outside, not the inside, which limits access and disruptions when it is being used. Patrons should ask library staff for access. Patrons using the room should not grant access to other patrons, unless they are a family member or part of their group and doing so would not exceed the room’s occupancy limits.

The spaces are designed for patrons needing a sensory space. The sensory rooms are not intended for other uses, including use as:

  • a general play area,
  • a social gathering space,
  • a meeting room or
  • a professional therapy space.

A library account is not required to use the sensory rooms.

The sensory rooms are not actively monitored by staff, although staff may check in on the space and are available to assist with equipment or other issues with using the space.

The sensory rooms are closed 30 minutes prior to closing to allow for cleaning of the equipment and spaces.

Rules for access and use of the sensory rooms

  • Sensory rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis during library hours. Please limit use to 30 minutes if others are waiting.
    • If others are waiting to use the space, patrons may be asked to leave if they have been using the space for more than 30 minutes.
  • Multiple parties may use the room at the same time. There are occupancy limits for each room:
    • Midland - up to 3
  • Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a caregiver.
  • No food or drinks in the sensory rooms, except for dietary or medical needs.
  • No talking on the phone.
  • Items and furniture in the room are to remain in the space.
  • Patrons may be asked to leave the sensory rooms or the library if they are not using the room for its intended use or they do not follow the sensory room rules for access and use and the library rules.

Staff are available to assist, if the space is not working for the patron or a conflict arises.
