Belmont, Hawthorne, & the Early Years of Sunnyside

Wed Jun 12
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

When lots in the Sunnyside Addition first went on sale in 1888, the neighborhood quickly became a popular east side streetcar suburb. Commercial development along Belmont Street and Hawthorne Boulevard soon  followed, and by the 1920s, the neighborhood was a bustling part of the city of Portland. Through images and maps, local historian Val C. Ballestrem shares the story of the early development of the neighborhood, from early steam-powered streetcars to the arrival of a beloved library and other well-known buildings. No registration required, space is limited.

A longtime resident of the Portland area, Val Ballestrem is the author of Lost Portland, Oregon (History Press, 2018) and has written about the Mount Hood Freeway and several other topics for the Oregon Encyclopedia. He has a master’s degree in history from Portland State University.
