Summer is great, but there’s something about getting cozy and creative indoors as the days get shorter that simply can’t be beat! We’re here to celebrate and uplift the indoor kids at heart. Find out how we can support you this fall with creative activities and resources, rain — or more rain.
Make something new in a makerspace
Learn tech and design skills at the library! With 3D printers, sewing machines and more, patrons of all ages have access to the tools, software and support needed to flex their creative muscles.
Check out drop-in sessions at the updated Rockwood makerspace, back after Rockwood Library’s construction as part of the 2020 Multnomah County Library Capital Bond. The Rockwood Library makerspace is made possible by gifts to The Library Foundation.
Plus, get ready for the all new makerspace that’ll be part of East County Library, scheduled to open in spring 2026! There will be room for classes exploring everything from robotics to construction to 3D printing.
Craft the day away
What’s your passion when it comes to crafts? We have so many crafty programs for you to enjoy at the library this fall! It’s a fun way to expand your creative skills and get an early start on your gift list for the holidays. Check out our calendar for a list of up-to-date events.
Explore:
- Sewing, knitting and crocheting groups.
- Beading workshops.
- Origami folding sessions.
- General crafting clubs for all ages.
Rock out to — or create — some new tunes
From Symphony Storytime to our Books to Beats program at Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center, anyone can find the perfect melody with help from the library.
If you’re looking to enjoy or make music, try out:
- Music and dance classes for kids ages 0 to 6.
- Previews of performances from the Portland Opera.
- Drop-in guitar and ukulele lessons plus drop-in violin lessons.
- Open labs to learn about digital and analog music creation.
Explore music events at your local library all fall long. They’ll make your heart sing!
Enjoy a game night
Is there anything better on a rainy day than a good game with a group of friends? Whether you’re a chess fiend, a teen who loves video games or a Pokémon card fan, we’ve got a gathering for you.
Book time for a study session
If you’re in the mood for some learning, don’t forget that you can reserve a small community room! Reserve your room online or in person, grab some books, and enjoy a few hours steeped in knowledge.
Get caught up on your TBR list
Of course we can’t leave out a treasured fall activity here at the library: reading!
If you’re part of a book club, check out our resources for book groups. More of a solo reader? Ask a librarian for a recommendation, take a look at our staff picks online or explore our Libby list of cozy fall reads. Plus, stop by your local library, browse the shelves and enjoy book displays curated by staff.
Your local library is more than just a house for books. It’s your workshop, your crafting studio and your community gathering space. No matter the weather this season, we’re excited to support your indoor kid journey here at the library!
