A large part of our lives happen online. Getting information, accessing resources and finding jobs rely heavily on access to devices and the internet. Digital inclusion is the goal to make the technology essential to modern life accessible to all.
What is digital inclusion?
There are many factors in digital inclusion. Three big parts are:
- Reliable and affordable access to the internet
- Devices to get online, which can include smartphones, computers, laptops, tablets and more
- Knowing how to get online and use devices to accomplish your goals — and get support when you need it.
All year around, libraries play a big role in providing access to tech and digital resources. Your library has what you need to thrive for free.
Get tech support and literacy education at the library
The library has resources to help community members become tech literate. You can sign up for classes, get support, reserve space to work and find other tech events.
- Free internet access: Connect to free wi-fi access with your device at any of our library locations.
- Get tech help: Find one-on-one drop in sessions with a Tech Helper at the library. You can reserve and learn how to use devices like computers, laptops, tablets and printers. A Tech Helper can even show you the basics of apps like Google Meet. Tech support is available in languages like Russian, Mandarin, Spanish and Vietnamese.
- Join computer literacy classes in your language: Along with drop-in sessions, the library hosts computer literacy classes in multiple languages.
- Learn how to edit videos: Whether you’re a young professional looking to improve your resume or just wanting a new skill, you can learn the basics of video editing at the library.
- Reserve a community room: For folks who need a place to host online or in-person meetings using a device, library staff can help you reserve a community room and get connected. With AV technology and 27 community rooms across 20 locations, you can get all your work done at the library.
Support digital inclusion at the library
Join a tech event: This month, the library is participating in Digital Inclusion Week by hosting Talk Tech Together: Strategies for Digital Empowerment on October 7. Discuss interests, needs and concerns related to technology literacy and education. You can talk about a variety of suggested topics or bring your own ideas.
Volunteer as tech support: Are you computer savvy? Support digital inclusion by helping others build their computer literacy skills. Find volunteer opportunities at the library.
