Belmont Library 

Closed: September 7, 2024
Reopening: Summer 2026
Alternate locations for services during closure: Central Library, Holgate Library and Hawthorne Holds Pickup at 3557 SE Hawthorne Blvd 

Belmont is adding a new, two-story building to its current one. This will more than double the building’s current size. 

New features include:

  • Flexible meeting spaces for community use
  • A large youth space for children and families
  • A dedicated teen area
  • Updated technology and faster internet
  • Community artwork

Gresham Library

Gresham Library permanently closed.
East County Library coming soon: May 16, 2026 
Alternate libraries for services during closureFairview-Columbia LibraryRockwood Library and Midland Library

Gresham Library is permanently closing ahead of East County Library’s opening. This brand-new library will be the second largest library in the county at 95,000 square feet, similar in size to Central Library.

Features include:

  • A large auditorium with flexible seating.
  • Creative learning spaces to explore everything from 3D printing to robotics.
  • An audiovisual studio that provides a professional studio experience.
  • Secure indoor and outdoor family spaces, plus a teen room.
  • An outdoor theater and plaza for performances and other events.
  • New artwork representing the community throughout the indoor and outdoor space.

St. Johns Library

Closed: Oct 11, 2024
Reopening: Summer 2026
Alternate locations for services during closure: St. Johns Holds Pickup, North Portland Library and Northwest Library

St. Johns will receive much-needed updates honoring its historic architecture while adding 2,900 square feet. 

New features:

  • A large play and learning space for children and families.
  • Flexible meeting spaces for community use.
  • A teen area with space for technology, homework and creative expression.
  • New art that represents the community.
  • Updated technology and faster internet
  • New collections tailored for St. Johns patrons

Library collections during construction

Library collections (books, media, etc.) will be affected by construction. Some items will be moved to storage and unavailable during building closures. You can always find up-to-date information about available materials through the library catalog. If the item you are looking for is not available to be checked out, take a look at our vast collection of e-books, audiobooks, and streaming media, all free to use with your library card.
