Central Library will remain closed July 3

Following nearby tragic shooting, the library is providing support to affected workers

PORTLAND, Ore. — Jul 3, 2025 — Central Library will remain closed to the public July 3, with plans to reopen after the Independence Day holiday, on Saturday, July 5. The closure follows after a tragic shooting that occurred offsite but nearby July 1.

The library and Multnomah County partners are working to provide trauma-related services and support to Central Library staff who witnessed or are affected by this event and its aftermath.

The library and Multnomah County are also using this time to conduct a comprehensive review of their extensive security protocols and emergency response procedures to ensure the library maintains the highest standards of safety.

“When the worst kind of tragedy happens near a library, it has profound effects on all of us,” said Director of Libraries Annie Lewis. “Our library is dedicated to working with our elected leaders and partners to make our library spaces as safe and welcoming as they can be.”

The library and County leadership have been working expediently and cooperatively with the City of Portland, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Portland Police Bureau, and other partners to find solutions to address issues and to create a more welcoming environment outside Central Library, recognizing that community safety is a collective effort.

The library and County workplace security are increasing security officer foot patrols, priority monitoring of Central library cameras by the County’s central security office and continued efforts to inhibit and report drug use and distribution.

In addition to these enhanced efforts, the library’s everyday security effort at Central Library includes four uniformed contract security officers and two library personnel acting in a Person in Charge role scheduled during every open hour. These security staff continuously monitor library spaces and the perimeter of the building.

The safety and security of staff and patrons is the top priority for the library. The library is committed to continuously evaluating its safety and security protocols and adapting its practices to best serve and protect our community, the library is also actively exploring additional security measures with County leaders, partners, law enforcement and members of the downtown Portland community

The library and Multnomah County are supporting Portland Police Bureau in their investigation and defers all questions about the incident to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

All other libraries remain open as usual (closed on Friday, Jul 4). See hours and locations
