We get that feeling – your favorite library reopened with incredible updates. But now it’s closed for construction again. So what’s going on?
The library is headed into the final stretch of the Multnomah County Library Capital Bond projects. All libraries will reopen by the end of the summer, ahead of schedule and on budget.
This was possible because the bond project teams followed careful financial management of the projects due to increased materials costs as a result of inflation. The bond team’s good planning left the library with additional funds that we can use on further improvements to our library spaces.
Making improvements to the libraries
While the improvements at each library will vary, in general the work will focus on the following priorities:
- Reducing operational costs
- Restroom improvements
- Improving accessibility
- Equity across projects
- Safety and security improvements
- Technology improvements
Scheduling updates
The schedule for these updates is currently being fine-tuned. Depending on the scope of the projects, closures may be a day (replacing lighting) to months (replacing a roof).
Hillsdale Library will close to the public starting August 24, 2026, to install a brand-new roof, lighting and more. The construction will last into December 2026. The precise opening date will be shared widely with the public as soon as it’s set.
At Hillsdale, updates include:
- A brand new roof for the entire library.
- New LED lighting throughout that provides a more comfortable reading and visiting experience.
- Upgrades to ADA restrooms to include accessible wave operators.
- New HVAC system equipment
Library patrons will receive plenty of notice before closures, including updates on the website, signage at the location and emails to patrons who have that particular location designated as their holds pickup.
