These new updates are making the libraries even better!

We get that feeling – your favorite library reopened with incredible updates. But now it’s closed for construction again. So what’s going on?

The library is headed into the final stretch of the Multnomah County Library Capital Bond projects. All libraries will reopen by the end of the summer, ahead of schedule and on budget.

This was possible because the bond project teams followed careful financial management of the projects due to increased materials costs as a result of inflation. The bond team’s good planning left the library with additional funds that we can use on further improvements to our library spaces.

Making improvements to the libraries

While the improvements at each library will vary, in general the work will focus on the following priorities:

  • Reducing operational costs
  • Restroom improvements
  • Improving accessibility
  • Equity across projects
  • Safety and security improvements
  • Technology improvements

Scheduling updates

The schedule for these updates is currently being fine-tuned. Depending on the scope of the projects, closures may be a day (replacing lighting) to months (replacing a roof).

One of the first libraries scheduled for updates is Albina Library, which will be closed from May 18 through 24. The library will reopen on May 26 after the Memorial Day holiday. Updates at Albina include:

  • A refinished Knott Street entry with new wood panels and accessible door operators.
  • Accessible door openers on the ADA restrooms, terrace and courtyard doors.
  • Lighting for the hanging sculptures in the Russell Street lobby.
  • New exterior sculptures from artist Greg Robinson from the Regional Arts & Culture Council.

Midland Library will also undergo upgrades, and will be closed from May 26 through June 6. The last day the library is open to the public is May 24, ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. At Midland, updates include:

  • Sewer repairs and improvements on the original sewer line.
  • Upgrades to the community gallery including picture rails and tackable panels.
  • A more durable finish on the Gathering Circle wood floor.
  • Upgrades to three ADA restrooms to include accessible wave operators.
  • Updated outdoor benches with durable materials.
  • New chair rails in the community rooms along with a freshly painted wall

Library patrons will receive plenty of notice before closures, including updates on the website, signage at the location and emails to patrons who have that particular location designated as their holds pickup.

The library understands that closures of any length are inconvenient and frustrating. We appreciate your patience as we further improve and modernize your libraries.
