Books for beginning readers

Finding books for children who are beginning to read can be a challenge.

Welcome to Reading is a collection of beginning reader books that make it easier to find books at the right reading level for early readers. Four categories are each organized by color.

The books get more complex as kids move to the next color category. You can search for individual titles in the library catalog:

Decodable books

Decodable books help kids practice the letter and sound relationships they have learned. Readers are encouraged to sound out words rather than guess. The books gradually become more complex as children learn more phonics skills. The books on these lists have decodable text:

Welcome to Reading bags

Each level also has color-coded bags with 5 to 8 books and a caregivers’ guide with ideas for creating a stronger reader. You can place them on hold and check them out like any other item:

Also available in Spanish!
