Read top newspapers for free

With databases like EBSCOHost and Pro-Quest, library users have free access to top newspaper publications like The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and more. In Pro-Quest,  U.S. Major Dailies, you’ll find U.S. national and regional newspapers. With Pro-Quest’s Ethnic NewsWatch, read current and historical coverage of various communities of language and culture.

To access newspapers, follow the steps below, or contact us and a library staff member can help.

Oregonian

  1. Go to the Oregonian Collection with Historical Archives on the library website and sign in.
  2. Once logged in, scroll down to find the text that says: Oregonian, The (Portland, OR) 2017 - Current USA - OR - Portland Newspaper Image English.
  3. Through this link, you can view recent issues or browse issues by date. To choose an issue by date, scroll down and pick a year and date on the calendar.

Another option is to view Oregonian, The: Web Edition Articles (Portland, OR) 2012 - Current USA - OR - Portland Web-Only Source Text English.

The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal and more

  1. Choose New York Times (1980-present) and click on Begin using this resource. The library also offers articles as far back as 1851 in New York Times Historical.
  2. The link directs you to U.S. Major Dailies where you can access The New York Times and four other top newspapers. The content is available by 8am each day and provides archives stretching as far back as 1980.
  3. In the “Enter search terms…” insert information you are looking for in the New York Times. 
  • Pro-tip: type the date you are looking for. This will show all articles for that date. 
  • If looking for a specific article, use keywords.
