Craft Circle: Textile Mending

Native American Heritage Month: Weaving Pine Needle Baskets

Did you know that you can weave with English ivy, pine needles, or cedar? Learn basic basket weaving with the renown fiber artist, and Karuk basket weaver, Celeste Whitewolf. Celeste brings knowledge, warmth, patience, and fun to this day-long workshop. You'll learn to create a basket using locally sourced, pliant pine needles! This class is suitable for tweens and older.

Celeste is a member of the Columbia Basin Basket-weavers Guild, the Northwest Native American Basket-weavers Association, and is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Umatilla.

We will engage in discussions pertaining to generational, ancestral and racial trauma. Education will be provided on the benefits of reiki, vibrational sound healing, aromatherapy, meditation and breathwork for healing through anxiety, depression and trauma. Join us for this beautiful program led by Sankofa Center for Healing founder, ZaDora Williams, LCSW.

Hillsdale Library history

Though not officially named “Hillsdale” until the 1980s, the Southwest Portland neighborhood library had been serving residents in the area for decades prior. The current building holds LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification, with some of the materials coming from local manufacturers. The building was designed by Thomas Hacker and Associates Architects, Inc.

Holgate Library history

Add summaryHolgate Library opened in its current location in 1971, replacing the Arleta and Lents branch libraries, which had been serving this region of Southeast Portland since the early 1900s. The library was renovated in 2000. In 2020, Multnomah County voters approved a capitol bond project to build and modernize library buildings. Holgate Library is being rebuilt on its current site. The new Holgate Library will reopen in 2024.

Laolao's Dumplings Author Visit and Craft

Join Oregon Book Award-winning author Dane Liu for the release of her new picture book Laolao’s Dumplings, which Publishers Weekly called a “moving tale of intergenerational and community bonds” in a starred review. Dane will read aloud, answer your questions, and together we will make our wishes for the new year and wrap them into dumpling ornaments. For ages 4-9. Each family will receive a free copy of Laolao's Dumplings. Free tickets available 30 minutes in advance.

Sellwood-Moreland Library began as a reading room in 1905. In 2002, after several relocations, this Southeast Portland library found its new home in a mixed-use facility.
