Sensory accommodation kits

Kits to assist with sensory processing differences are available at all locations in the children’s areas for in-library use. The kits have tools to help with background noises and other distractions, and to help calm.

Sensory Storytime

This preschool storytime is especially welcoming for children and families who are looking for a smaller, more adaptive library experience. Find Sensory Storytime locations, dates and times.

Sensory rooms

At certain locations, dedicated stimulant-sensitive spaces are available for library patrons with sensory needs. These spaces are designed to decrease stress and anxiety, and support self-regulation.

Sensory Rooms are available at the following locations:

  • Midland Library at the back of the Gathering Circle. Capacity is limited to 3 people at a time.
    • The sensory room at Midland is kept locked. It locks from the outside, not the inside, which limits access and disruptions when it is being used. Ask library staff for access.

Multiple parties may use the room at the same time. Please follow the capacity limit for each room.

The room features may include the following

  • Marble and other tactile panels offer a calming effect through sight, sound
  • Bubble tube with a stream of bubbles and changing colors for a relaxing visual experience
  • Fiber optic tunnel to crawl through and a mat that vibrates with music
  • Dimmable lighting
  • Seating options
