It’s time to get excited. There are some major openings of brand-new and refreshed libraries in 2026!
Libraries opening this winter
Northwest Library
Scheduled to open on January 10, the new Northwest Library is more than double the size! This library has moved to a permanent, library-owned location on NW Pettygrove St. from the prior leased space on NW Thurman St. It’s also across the street from a future city park, making it perfect for a family outing. New features include a larger book collection, more community rooms, spaces dedicated to children and teens, updated technology and new community artwork.
Hollywood Library
Scheduled to open this winter, Hollywood Library is going through renovations to refresh the space. Updates include a new children’s area, a space dedicated for patrons to use technology, upgraded lighting and more. Plus, a new mural from local artist Kyler Martz on the vestibule glass will pay homage to Beverly Cleary!
Libraries opening this spring
East County Library
The all-new East County Library arrives in spring 2026! This library, located at the Gresham City Hall MAX Station for easy transit access, will be around the same size as the downtown Portland Central Library at around 95,000 square feet. Check out the construction livestream to see real-time progress on the space.
This extraordinary new library includes:
- A large auditorium with flexible seating for large events — plus an outdoor theater for music and more!
- A Creative Learning space, where you can learn anything from robotics to 3D printing.
- Our system’s first-ever audiovisual studio that provides patrons with a professional studio experience.
- Large indoor and secure outdoor family spaces, plus a teen room.
- And so much more!
St. Johns Library
Scheduled to open in spring/summer 2026, St. Johns Library is adding about 2,900 square feet of additional space onto the existing building while honoring the historic architecture. The library will get an updated collection, an interactive early learning space, a mobile creative learning lab, an area for teens, updated technology and new artwork.
Libraries opening this summer
Belmont Library
Scheduled to open in summer 2026, Belmont Library is adding a new, two-story building to the current space — and in doing so, more than doubling in size! This additional space makes room for features like a large space for kids and families, a teen area, flexible community rooms and more. Plus, the drivers among us should get excited: there will be additional space for parking!
We’re so grateful for your patience with temporary services, as we update your libraries for the modern era. These transformations wouldn’t have been possible without the voter-approved 2020 Multnomah County Library Capital Bond. We can’t wait to share these new, expanded spaces with you!
