This year has been busy for your Multnomah County Library system. You’ve seen libraries close for construction, plus new and renovated ones re-open. These are exciting times as each library is updated for you to enjoy.

Here’s what we have accomplished as of July 2024:

July

  • The new Holgate Library opened! This is the first permanent library to open in Multnomah County in more than a decade, built from the ground up. It’s a bright and modern space designed to be open and flexible for the community.

June

  • Northwest Library broke ground at 2030 NW Pettygrove Street. Northwest Library is moving to a new location, going from a leased space at 2300 NW Thurman to 2030 NW Pettygrove Street. This new location will be around 11,000 square feet, more than twice the size of the current building at 4,700 square feet.

April and May

  • Construction was very busy at the new East County Library site, located conveniently in Gresham, next to the Gresham City Hall Park and Ride. Crews installed a construction tower crane to help move materials around at the site which will eventually house a brand new, 95,000 square foot destination library. This is only the second tower crane ever constructed in Gresham. You can keep tabs on the library’s construction through a livestream.

March

February

  • Capitol Hill Library reopened to the public after getting fresh paint, new carpet, updated shelving and comfortable new seating.
  • Central Library opened after getting a refresh that includes more comfortable seating, fresh paint and carpet, rooms with lower shelf height, a renovated children’s space, an updated Friends of the Library retail space and more!
  • The library opened a new Operations Center! This new space was the first of the library’s capital building projects, funded by the 2020 Multnomah County voter-approved bond. The Operations Center is where new books and materials come into the library system; where items placed on hold are sorted and transferred; and where specialized materials and services for community outreach are held. The building is also home to Rose City Reads, run by Friends of the Library. Rose City Reads carries items previously sold during Friends of the Library spring and fall book sales, along with retired library materials.

January

  • Gregory Heights reopened to the public with new features including an engaging teen area with plush seating for studying and connection.

But, there’s more to come! Multnomah County Library at University of Oregon continues to serve the community impacted by North Portland and Albina libraries’ construction closures. In August, Hillsdale Library and Fairview Library will be reopening after receiving refreshes.
