Families come in all shapes and sizes, and we are here to help you see yours reflected in books and library services.

Rainbow Family Storytime is a queer-led and LGBTQ+ themed storytime series where LGBTQ+ families can share and connect in community. Parents, caregivers and children from birth to age 6, can enjoy this joyful and supportive storytime.

“Everything in this storytime is geared towards uplifting queer family experiences and queer identity,” says Natasha Forrester Campbell, early childhood services librarian. “Being part of the LGBTQ+ community is a joyful experience, and this storytime gives families a safe place to experience and express this.”

With the variety of songs sung and books read, kids can see their family mirrored in their peers and in the community. Rainbow Storytime helps highlight books with a variety of family structures and gender identities like a parent or child who is nonbinary.

“We love seeing families' eyes light up when they find a book that matches their family unit,” continues Natasha. “As library staff, it’s fulfilling to see that people are excited to find these and see their identity recognized. With these storytimes we are building community and connection in a place where your identity is valued and celebrated. It’s a really joyful experience.”

Youth Librarian Rebecca Chernay added “We recently read a book about different pronouns and when we got to the page with she/her, a young patron shouted ‘That's me!’ This is the affirming joy we are going for.”

The library offers this storytime at various library locations. You can find different dates and times that work for you.

“We want to give people a place to connect and see the library as a resource for all aspects of life,” says Natasha.
