“Rise like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number-
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you
Ye are many-they are few.”
(Percy Bysshe Shelley)
I’m a voracious reader and am usually in the middle of several books and journal articles at any given time. I'm definitely interested in fiction and non-fiction equally. My primary interests include popular music (I’m well-versed in classic rock to punk to reggae to hip-hop, as well as the current Top 40 - I’d argue that Taylor Swift is one of the more important cultural adventurers of our moment), political theory (Aristotle to Machiavelli to Marx), modern poetry (especially post-war US poetry), popular culture (particularly where it intersects with the political), science fiction, graphic novels and comics (favorites include Alan Moore, Grant Morrison and Mike Carey).
I recently enjoyed Alexandra Kleeman's You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine , Cixin Liu's The Three-body Problem , Brian K Vaughan's Saga series, Joshua Clover's Riot. Strike. Riot: The New Era of Uprisings , and I keep going back to the poetry of Juliana Spahr - most recently That Winter The Wolf Came.
I've co-written and performed a rock opera, played in three bands, and my music interests border on obsessive. I've helped catalog books for the PDX Occupy Library, am a lover of cats (domesticated and not) and I'm an avid jogger. I’m driven by the idea that reading disrupts our beliefs and pre-conceptions as much as it reassures.
