The theme for Black History Month 2024 is “African Americans and the Arts.” Celebrate this year’s theme with these suggestions:
- Attend upcoming library events!
- View historical photos in Multnomah County Library's project Our Story: Portland Through an African American Lens
- Delve into the Black Resources Collection and the Black Pacific Northwest Collection to find more than 9,000 books, films, music and more.
- Discover e-books or listen to audiobooks from the Celebrating Black Lives booklist.
- Explore Oregon’s Black History through Black in Oregon 1840, Blacks in Oregon and Oregon’s Enigmatic Black History.
- Research African American Communities or the Oxford African American Studies Center to find historical pamphlets, newspapers, maps and articles by top scholars.
- Use Hoopla to access graphic novels and comics.
- Investigate your genealogy through Ancestry.com (available at all library locations), HeritageQuest Online or Heritage Hub (both available remotely with your library card and password).
- Explore a virtual Black history museum like The History Makers: The Digital Repository for the Black Experience, The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture Searchable Museum, or the Google Arts and Culture Black History and Culture exhibit.
- Visit the Black Artists of Oregon exhibit at the Portland Art Museum, available until March 2024. Explore My Discovery Pass to visit with your library card.
