Central Library will close August 1 - November 1 for construction

Exterior terrace project will create new outdoor public space

PORTLAND, Ore. — June 21, 2022 — Central Library will be closed to the public Aug. 1 - Nov.1, 2022 to undergo major improvements. During that time, crews will undertake a series of projects that will create new outdoor public spaces, enhance access to the building and refresh and expand restroom amenities. Access to the building’s eastern sidewalk and street parking will be limited beginning this month.

Multnomah County Library is hard at work to build, expand and renovate library spaces for the public as a result of the voter-approved 2020 Library building bond. In the coming years, Central Library will receive a number of updates and improvements that will make the library a more accessible space for all library patrons. Beginning in June 2022, some of that work will begin with multiple construction projects funded by the bond and other sources.

The library will be closed during construction to decrease longer disruptions of service by completing multiple projects, speeding the construction work, and to lower overall costs for Multnomah County residents.

During this time, construction crews will:

  • Begin construction of two new outdoor public terraces
  • Improve Americans with Disabilities Act required (ADA) access to the building and alter landscaping
  • Begin the expansion and remodeling of the primary first floor restrooms (the noisiest, most disruptive phases)
  • Add a new family restroom on the first floor and renovate and expand an existing family restroom (depending on permitting)
  • Refresh the second and third floor restrooms
  • Upgrade electrical components in movable shelving (storage)
  • Stage equipment and materials for all projects

Central Library and other locations will experience periodic closures in the future to complete bond-funded work.

This set of projects is funded by Library building bond funds, Prosper Portland-issued grant funds, Library Capital Improvement Plan funds, and Library District Capital Reserve funds. The library will post more details and updates to this page.
