Here are answers to some common questions. Have more? We are standing by to help. Ask us! multcolib.org/contact-librarian.
What about the old catalog and website?
First, the catalog and account management interface you’ve been using up to this point is still available. It looks a little different, but it is not going away and it will continue to work just like it always has. You can find it here: catalog.multcolib.org. It is linked from numerous places on the new website via links to the “Classic Catalog.”
The old library website is no longer available. The new website is easy to navigate, but if you have trouble finding something, try searching for it in the big orange box at the top of each page (or on the middle of the home page). The search function has been dramatically improved. You can ask a librarian for help at any time.
What about my account information?
Your library account information (holds, lists, reading history and so on) is safe and sound, and no action is required. You can still access your account information the same way you have been (through the Classic Catalog), if you wish.
What is My MCL?
My MCL is a new and vastly improved catalog and account management service. All you need is your library card and password to get going. You will need to create a username to use the My MCL service.
My MCL offers a number of benefits not available through the Classic Catalog. It is very easy to search. You can rate and comment on titles, and read what others have to say. You can follow patrons with similar interests, like you would on Twitter. You can tag. It’s available in Spanish. It’s available from any mobile device. And you can still make lists and keep track of what you’ve read.
We’ve put together a guide on how to use My MCL. Use it, or just click on the orange “Help” button on the upper right of any My MCL page.
What is my password? Will my PIN still work?
You will notice that you are now asked for your “password” in places where you used to be asked for your PIN. Your password and your PIN are the same thing. We’re calling it a password now because it can have 4-10 letters or numbers, instead of numbers only. Your existing PIN will continue to work, and you do not need to change it unless you wish to.
How does this affect the mobile app?
Although the new website is mobile optimized, the library’s multcolib mobile app service will continue without interruption.
What about my privacy?
If you choose to sign up for My MCL (remember, it’s optional), your privacy will be as protected as you wish. You choose your username, and we recommend you choose one that does not identify you. Your holds, fines, reading history (now called “recently returned”) and other personal information is visible only to you, ever.
You have the option to share your shelves with other patrons. They will be set to public when you sign up, but they will be empty until you begin filling them. To make them private, go to “My settings,” then “Privacy.” You can change your privacy settings any time, and you can also change the settings for individual titles.
Please see Your privacy for complete information.
