Long before Portland was a city or Oregon was a state - before cars, planes, or moving vans - if people moved across the country they usually went by wagon. Around 500,000 people traveled West on the Oregon trail between the 1840s and the 1870s. It was not an easy journey, and about 20,000 people died along the way.
