Getting started with OverDrive

OverDrive is a collection of e-books and audiobooks that can be downloaded to a variety of devices such as PCs, laptops, e-readers, and mobile devices.

To access the OverDrive collection, you will need:

  • A valid library card.
  • Access to the Internet.
  • The free software for the device or computer on which you wish to use your OverDrive items.
  • A valid email address so you can be notified when your titles are available for download.

(OverDrive READ titles can be read on the computers in the library; please ask a staff person for assistance.)

Step 1: Download/Install Software

Step-by-step instructions on downloading to your specific device can be found on OverDrive’s Help page.

Kindle users do not need to download any additional software. Items are transferred via your Amazon Account.

Users of other devices will need to download and install the free software that allows you to enjoy the type(s) of materials you are interested in.

  • To download audiobooks to your PC or Mac, you will need to download OverDrive Media Console.
  • To download ebooks to your PC or Mac, you will need to download Adobe Digital Editions.
  • To download audiobooks and ebooks to your mobile devices, you will only need to download the free app, OverDrive Media Console, found at your device’s app store.

Also, books available in the new OverDrive READ format do not require any additional software when viewed in a compatible web browser.

Step 2: Register with OverDrive

After you have installed the software that you downloaded, you need to register for a free OverDrive account with your Facebook or e-mail account; this will allow you to sync your OverDrive activity across all your devices.

When you create an account, you'll be asked to verify your email address. To complete the process, click the link in your verification email.

For downloadable audio books, OverDrive Media Console for Windows requires a security upgrade. The first time that Windows Media Player attempts to open a DRM-protected file, it will alert you that a security upgrade must be performed before the file can be opened. The upgrade takes just a few moments.

Step 3: Check Out and Enjoy OverDrive digital media

To browse search the collection: OverDrive

When you locate a title of interest, simply borrow the title and add it to your bookshelf. If the desired item is not available, you may place a hold on the title. Patrons have lending period options to choose from for the different media types. Patrons can have a total of 15 items checked out at once.

If you place a hold on a title, you have 3 days to check out the item after an email is sent out notifying you that it is available, or the item is made available to the next patron. You may have a maximum of 15 items on your waiting list.

When placing a hold or borrowing a title, you will be required to enter your full library card number and PIN (password).

Once you have borrowed the item, you will be taken to your bookshelf, where you can either download the e-book or audiobook or read the e-book immediately in your browser (when available). Click the appropriate link to download or read your file.
