Read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Achebe tells two intertwining stories, both of which center around Okonkwo, a "strong man" of an Ibo village in Nigeria; one focusing on tradition, and the other on modernity. The arrival of aggressive, proselytizing European missionaries causes a clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world. Published in 1958, it is seen as the archetypal modern African novel in English.
