Read The Misanthrope, or The Cantankerous Lover by Molière. The Misanthrope, as comedy, satirizes the hypocrisies of French aristocratic society. But Molière has an underlying serious tone, about the flaws all humans possess. Unlike his other dramas, and differing from other farces of the time, Molière employs dynamic characters, who develop throughout the play, versus the typically flat characters of the period. Judge for yourself whether Alceste-the-Misanthrope is fool or prophet.
