Lunar New Year 2024 — Year of the Dragon
Lunar New Year at Multnomah County Library is a special time to enjoy the rich history and traditions celebrated in cultures all across Asia. At the end of January or early February, a new lunar calendar year begins, with a zodiac animal guiding each lunar year. This year— 2024 — marks the Year of the Dragon. The library will celebrate Lunar New Year with events and programs at a variety of locations in February.

Local artists and community-inspired artworks are coming to your new libraries! As part of the voter-approved 2020 library building bond, libraries are receiving upgrades and expansions. Local artists are creating unique installations at many of these sites that represent the community’s history, culture and diversity.

Slavic New Year at Multnomah County Library

Новый Год (Slavic New Year) is celebrated in over fifteen countries on December 31. At Multnomah County Library the word Slavic is added to the beginning of the phrase to acknowledge the distinct traditions of Russian-speaking countries.

North Portland Library's Kwanzaa painting on display at Portland Art Museum
North Portland Library has been participating in community-wide Kwanzaa celebrations for decades, hosting art exhibits, book displays and events. Incorporating the seven guiding principles of Kwanzaa is “Isis,” a piece of art, created in 1992, by local artist Charlotte Lewis and acquired by Multnomah County Library in 2001.

Russian book club for kids
The library’s Russian-speaking team hosts a monthly children’s book club for ages 6 to 9. The book club began when Russian-speaking staff noticed a gap between the ages children visit the library for storytimes and the programming available for teens.
