Application for School Participation - Author visit with A.S. King

Educators of 7th-12th grade students: Multnomah County Library invites you to be a part of a visit May 2, 2017 from award-winning author A.S. King. The New York Times Book Review writes that "Maybe there are writers more adept than King at capturing the outrageous and outraged voice of teenagers, but it’s difficult to think of one." 

Thanks to the support of The Library Foundation, copies of one of King's books will be made available to select 7th–12th grade students from around Multnomah County. Schools with the greatest educational and financial need will receive first consideration. Each group that is selected will receive a classroom set with the expectation that the book will be read and studied in advance of King's appearance on May 2nd. The Library Foundation will reimburse funds for transportation for those attending the event as a group.

Agreement:

We understand that if we are chosen to participate in this program, our school agrees to attend the A.S. King Author Visit School Assembly and to study the author and her work prior to the assembly. School selections will be based on some, but not necessarily all, of the following considerations:

  • Be a low socio-economic status school.
  • Have a significant student population not meeting reading benchmarks.
  • Have at least two enthusiastic teachers and/or media specialists who will collaborate together and with the A.S. King Author Visit School Assembly Committee, serve as school leaders, and meet all program commitments.

Commitments include:

  •  Prepare a group of up to 70 students to attend the assembly.
  •  Schedule time for reading and discussions.
  •  Prepare the other adults at your school who will attend the assembly with students.
  •  Coordinate transportation for your students to the assembly.
  •  Complete the evaluation forms within two weeks following the lecture.

Multnomah County Library agrees to grant participating schools reimbursement to cover costs incurred for transportation. In addition, the Library will provide books for students, discussion guides and author information.
