This book tells the story of a Utopia gone haywire. A wonderful, thought-provoking book, i would recommend it to anyone. Anthem is a nice quick-read only about 140 pages.

I couldn't agree with you more! I too used to be a Twilight lover, but after re-reading them a few monthes ago, I realized just how terrible they really are. Check out this clip, even if you aren't a Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan like me. It really shows Edward in his true creeper self.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the TV show): Joss Whedon

This is my absolute favorite TV show ever. It was made before Twilight, so it doesn't copy any of Stephenie Meyer's ideas, which is really refreshing, and it makes vampires and werewolves and a bunch of other magic stuff really interesting. It doesn't only deal with the mystic parts of life, but getting by in highschool, college, and the world in general. Joss Whedon, the director/writer/producer is amazing, and I also recommend some of his other works, like "Angel" (which is a "Buffy" spinoff), "Firefly", and "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" (don't reject it just because of the funny name!) Joss Whedon currently has a show on TV called "Dollhouse", which is awesome but doesn't have enough viewers so it is going to be cut! Please watch all of these great shows, especially BtVS!

i really like this book it is awesome. it has really clever ideas and situations. its about four kids who try to save the world from an evil genius trying to take over the world. they come together when they see an ad in the paper saying ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD LOOKING FOR SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES?????? the main character is an 11 year old boy named reynie i love the chapter titles too...

Good Morning Revival: Good Charlotte

This CD absolutly rocked! I loved all the songs on it. The CD has a dark sound to it. A lot of the songs are about love or broken hearts. Good Charlotte has really done a fantastic job on this CD! I rate it a 10! You should really get it from the library. : ))

The Book Thief: Markus Zusak

One of the most amazing books I've read in a while. It's about a girl named Liesel Meminger who lives in Nazi Germany in 1942. The story is all told from the perspective of a weary and insightful Death. I know the topic of Nazi Germany has been taken by nearly all fiction writers and reinterpreted, but who else has used Death to narrate (if I am wrong in believing this is a first, please write in and tell me)? Zusak has a remarkable control of his story and characters. Liesel (and her love of books) gets developed in their wonderful story, along with the relationships you see her make with the boy next door, Rudy Steiner, the Jewish fist fighter who hides in their house, Max Vandenberg and her foster parents, Hans and Rose Hubermann. Liesel's life and the lives of the millions around her drift in and out of coming together as Death talks about battles and deaths going on all over- and his obsession with the brilliant words of the young book thief. It's a book about Nazi Germany, make no mistake. It makes no attempt to pass itself off as a feel-good type book with its heart-tugging ending that anyone with feelings ought to cry at. But it's also about human relations, and the propensity of humans to be terribly...well, terrible and horrid and destructive, and the ability at the same time to be remarkably beautiful and sweet. It is a story with glorious highs and unbeatable lows. Death adds enough sarcasm, irony and worldviews to make this a book that makes you think on all levels- socially (in terms of the relationships), physically (in terms of the battles and the deaths), emotionally (in every aspect), historically (about Hitler Germany) and, above all, humanely as Liesel discovers for herself what humanity is capable of. READ THIS BOOK OR FOREVER LANGUISH IN THE PITS OF THE UNINITIATED IN THE WONDERS OF MARKUS ZUSAK!!!!!!!

Howls Moving Castle: Diana Wynn Jones

I don't care if you've seen the movie, read the book! It was super good. After reading it I became addicted to this author. You may have seen the Miyazaki film by the same name and be thinking that reading the book would be boring but its not! It is one of the best books I've ever read.

So basically I just spent my day reading a 350 page book that was not even worth reading. It was so poorly organized, the structure lacking and ending not worthy or in sync with story, as well as uncreative, with not a fluid amount of originality or deemed a refreshing read. The whole time the author was trying to convince the reader that she did in fact know a lot about soccer (which seemed irrelevant to character's decision and afterthought of dumping her baby in the trash; not to say this crime in insignificant, but including soccer was overly unnecessary) and that the author knew much about the legal system and juvenile system, taking up much of the novel explaining her intellect in all three of these subjects, drifting away to the point of the plot. Not only did the author barely delve into the main character's mentality preventing the reader to connect, she also incorporated an exceeding amount of superfluous characters that came by onto the focal character's life. Don't read it. Unless you wish to use it as part of your intrinsic motivation to deliver some good literature into the world.

Warriors Into the Wild: Erin Hunter

I Loved it. Its also a book for a wide range of ages. I picked it up at 3:00 and fineshed at 10:30. It was awesome. I recomend this book to anyone who loves cats or adventure. I cant wait to read the next!

Ruby. 17 and her mom just abondoned her. Just packed up and left. So Ruby is sent to live with Cora, her older married sister. Life collides with chaos and Nate. Nate, the cute abused swimmer next door. I love this book and would rate it a 72 on a 1-10 scale. I LOVE SARAH DESSEN!!!!

Bite Me!: Melissa Francis

Bite Me! is a book about a seventeen year old vampire named AJ Ashe. After her mom gets married to her boyfriend's father, a very stressful and crazy week begins. AJ and her mother have to hide that they're vampires. It's quite a hard task, but once the crazy week happens, they will find that it is actually easier to keep their vampire secret. This book is filled with romance, creepiness, laughs, galore. It's a real turner. If I had to rate it 1-10, I would rate it a 9.

Sand Chronicles (manga): Hinako Ashihara

Awesome!!! Read this manga!!!! Its about a girl named Ann Uekusa who moves with her mom from Tokyo to rural Shimane after her parents get a divorce. She meets Daigo, Fuji and Shika, they all become her friends, things look up when she starts having a lot of fun with them. But then Ann's mom commits suicide. Ann is left depressed, not knowing what to do, and then Daigo comes to her to cheer her up and ends up making a promise that will change both of their lives...He says "I'll stay with you forever." But don't think their romance is so easy! Ann has to move to Tokyo with her dad when high school starts!! Now Daigo and Ann have a long distance relationship...will it work out?? --> find out! XD You should really read this!!! I love it! :D

harry potter and the goblet of fire: jk rowling

This is by far one of the best books in the harry potter series.Iwould recomend it to anyone ages 8-50.this book seems to be the point where harry starts to learn more about himself and his conection with lord voldemort and slowly begins to understand really why he is here and what he must do.So if you choose to read this book i hope you have a great time reading it.

ok so i used to really like these books. like, i was a total obsessed twihard. but after reading them a few more times i've realized that edward is total creeper. he like stalks bella and is obsessed with her and she is really stupid to be with him. these books set a horrible example for teenage girls everywhere. they're basically just saying "even if you have to die to be with someone (who is stalking you and is an immortal vampire) it's ok if you are in love and he is really hot." um, what? and smeyer's vocabulary is totally over used, she uses the same words to describe everything. and all smeyer does is describe how hot and sculpted edward's chest is and how clumsy and in love bella is. ew.

Hunter Brown and the Secret of the Shadow: The Miller Brothers

This is probably THE best book of our day! It has everything, action, adventure, mystery, suspense, puzzles, and life changing lessons. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! It doesn't matter if you're a kid, tween, teen, adult, or even a book hater, because once you pick this book up it is impossible to put it down. I HIGHLY recommend it. It is a must read!

Angels and Demons: Dan Brown

Better than the DaVinci Code in my opinion, because it has a lot of really clever mystery solving, as opposed to Robert Langdon knowing just about everything in the other book. It's factual and modren, and also is kinda funny, finding a balance between religion and science. Anyone who likes reading mysteries like Chasing Vermeer or lots of action involving gruesome murders should read this book!

Peaches follows the story of three teenage girls - Birdie, Leeda, and Murphy - as they discover the true meaning of friendship and what it means to be in love. Even though these three girls as different as can be, they find themselves bonding over peaches, secrets, and, of course, boys. Peaches is a sweet, juicy book filled with a delicious story. I highly recommend it to anyone who loved the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.

Right Behind You: Gail Giles

I just finished this book and I'm amazed by how great it was. When Kip was nine he set a kid on fire. The kid lived for three days and Kip spent about four years in a juvenile ward. After being released he learns that people know what he did so he and his family have to change identities and move. My description doesn't do this book justice so just read it and see for yourself.

this book is so cool. it's about true love, adventure, romance, and it has magic in it. I recommend this book to anyone, even if you don't like love stories or magic, there's always a first time.

This has to be one of the best books I have ever read in my whole reading life. It took a little bit for the book to get going and get good, but it is so worth reading through that part. But first you need to read the first book in the series called Inkheart which is also a good book, and if you saw the movie and didn't like it well that's because the movie sucked and is not like the book or even close to being as good as the book.

A very good book overall. IS a bit dull in the middle of it and can be very action packed in the end. My least recammended book out of the Harry Potter books. Good for ages 9-21. A bit of romance is encluded. Overall prety good. A three star book. M

Best Foot Forward: Joan Bauer

I really liked this book. It was about a girl who loved her job working in a quality shoe shop. Suddenly the quality of the shoes starts going down and its up to her and her co-workers to find out what is happening. The end is really surprising and really good. I recomend this book if you like shoes and stories about real life.

This is a cool spin-off of Arthurian legend, with all the characters brought into the modern world. When Elaine moves to go to Avalon High, she is immersed right into the world of highschool- and King Arthur. Will/Arthur is the quarterback, valedictorian and all-around nice guy with the pretty cheerleader girlfriend Jennifer/Guinevere and best friend (plus basic protector) Lance/Lancelot. Things go just the way they do in legend, with Will's stepbrother Marco/Mordred out to kill him. But will Elaine, apparently the Lady of Shalott, be able to save him where her namesake in myth never did? The drama is just beginning...

Among the Hidden is a story of a 12-year-old boy named Luke who doesn't exist. At least, the government thinks so. Luke is a shadow child. which means no one can know he's alive. This book tells his change from when he can't walk down his own stairs to when he tries to break in to someone's house. I read this book and it was a page turner. a few parts were a little slow, but I promise it does get better. I'm even reading it again. There are also other books about the government who only allows 2 kids per house. Everyone should read the series. It's amazing.

Hi, I just finished the best book I have ever read. And I have read a lot of books. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks. Basically, I'm just admiring it right now. There was no lust for male characters this time. It's simply intriguing and absolute brillance. Unlike Lauren Myracle books that carry very realistic problems and fun quirkiness. Unlike Sarah Dessen who creates the hottest boys. Unlike Denise Vega who assembles the story so well creating situations so tempting to join. Unlike John Green who has the most distinguished humor. That was amazing. Best. Book. Ever. I have gone Alpine sliding (in Portland, OR!!). I have contemplated on "I could care less" and "I couldn't care less." I love people who have beautiful vocabulary and aspire to talk with intelligence, sharpness, and quick wit (although I realize authors get a very long time to come up with comebacks characters say in the spur of the moments). I dream to create fiascos and schemes. I keep going back to page 76 to admire the word schadenfreude. I had English muffins today. What an articulate, bright, mildly disturbing, very fictional work of literature this is. The Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds is by far greater than... say, the Dead Poet's Society. Quote of the day: The books I considered great before were considered great because they carried situations, settings, positions I would have loved to be in, with characters I would have loved to know or be. This book is just good. Without all made-up stuff in my head. This wasn't in a way... porn. Thank you. *read this book!!*

This series is really great. I read the second book of the original series and enjoyed it so much. If you are a fan of adventure, fantasy or if you want to sit back and enjoy a book for enjoyment, this series will fulfill your desires.

The Proposal: Best movie I've seen this year! It's super cute and funny, a movie any teenage girl should go see with a bunch of friends. It's about a harsh boss (kinda like Meryl Streep's character in Devil Wears Prada, another good flick) who is about to be deported and so announces she is marrying her assistant. She bribes him into agreeing and off they go to Alaska to break the news to his family. So ensues laughter, confusion and a ton of fun. I LOVED THIS MOVIE! and am planning to buy it as soon as it comes out on DVD.

Ophelia: Hamlet told from Ophelia's viewpoint- a great idea and a really good book. You get an enrichment of the story, but it stays true to the main story lines that Shakespeare wrote. There are a couple things that were changed but they were explained well and always made for an interesting twist. I really, really liked this book.

I have to say, this is one of the best books I have ever read, its full of love and mysteries. I think everyone should read this book because it's an adventure in a book. I know you think lots of other books are also an adventure in a book, but this one is way better. I believe the end is the best because love finds its way into a(n) alien's (kind of) heart and a humans heart. Read the book to find out the rest!

Sara's Face: Melvin Burgess

One of the more disturbing books I've read in my life, Sara's Face details the story of Sara Carter, a girl who just wants to be famous, and Jonathon Heat, a rock star who just wants his face back. Jonathon has had several plastic surgeries in his life from the "free-thinker"/insane Dr. Kaye. He has had animal faces, and no face, and everything in between. Finally though, all the surgeries have ruined his face and it is rapidly failing him. He wears a mask all the time. Sara is a 17 year old. She lies a lot, but she lies like she's acting- taking on different roles and portraying them to a tee. One day, after an 'accident' she goes to the hospital and meets Heat, who tells her she is a kindred soul who might just become as big as him, with a little training...and plastic surgery. She agrees, and off they go to Heat's mansion. Sara gets steadily odder and odder throughout the book, even when her 'true love' (Mark) comes back to help her. It all builds to a stunning an! d strange climax, with the supernatural and the just plain disturbed mixing and matching. Who is Sara Carter, and will she discover that looks aren't everything in time to save her face...and her life? Not to sound cliched but- read Sara's Face to find out. You may just find yourself being very, very surprised.

AARON CARTER IS BACK!: okay most of us know Aaron Carter as the younger brother of Nick Carter from the backstreet boys. Aaron also guest starred in "Lizzie McGuire" in what seems like a million years ago. he even released a couple of albums and became the youngest male solo artist to have 3 consecutive hits in the U.K. Hits like "I want candy" and "saturday night" made him a platinum selling artist. After he released the album "saturday night", Aaron carter kinda like dissappeared. His whole career seemed to go downward. In 2008, he was arrested for drug posession. Despite his troubles, Aaron is back this year. Earlier this month, he released 2 new singles and just released another one a few days ago. Since his 2005 album, he has been working on his vocal range and a new sound. His music is now more R&B than pop and his voice sounds better than ever. Just last week, he updated on his twitter that he was writing a possible song for his brothers band.I know it's kind of desperate, but he ev! en gave out his cellphone number. He's been encouraging fans to call him and spread the word that he's back. So take a listen to the new stuff and spread the word. Bloodhound: Tamora Pierce

This is but the latest wonder from the pen of Tamora Pierce, this time the continued saga of Beka Cooper, ancestress of George Cooper (read the Song of the Lioness series to meet him). Beka is part of the Lower City's law enforcement, the Dogs. She is a new Dog who keeps losing her partners because she is so intense about her job. Then, the Dogs discover a counterfeiting scam that threatens to destroy the whole economy, so Beka and her old training partner Goodwin are off to Port Caynn to catch the criminals. Soon, Beka finds herself in the middle of the head of the city, the queen of the Rogues (the criminals) and Dale Rowan, a handsome guy who may or may not be involved. The love story was a little weak, but I liked it better weak than taking over the whole story. This is not a romance. It is an adventure story tinged with romance, and a great book if you're going on a vacation. Be sure to read the first book, Terrier, to pick up some of the background, and also check out all the other books by Pierce, because they are just as good as this one.

Bewitching Season: Marissa Doyle

I absolutely loved this book! It's about two twins who discover that their dear friend who has been teaching them magic is missing. They live in the Jane-Austen like period, a time where young ladies are 'presented' at court and married off as soon as possible. Neither is particularly happy with this, but one of them (Persy) discovers that husband-searching isn't so bad if there's a suitable young man you're searching for- namely, Lochinvar Seton. But Persy isn't sure whether he actually likes her- or if it's just the love spell she attempts to cast. It's a great book and I really can't do it justice at all, but for anyone who likes adventure stories tinged with romance, this is a great book to read- again and again and again.

These books are so good! I just read the 3rd one and loved it. It's about a girl named Clary who figures out that she is a Shadowhunter, who kill demons. It's really really really good! Fans of the books Twilight or Evernight or the TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel will love these books, trust me!

Elsewhere: Gabrielle Zevin

When Liz dies at age 15, she is very unhappy to learn that 'heaven' and 'hell' is actually mixed into one in a place called Elsewhere. In Elsewhere, you live a normal life, except that you can't get hurt, you can spy on Earth and you age backwards. Liz is pretty pissed- she wants to turn sixteen and get a license, not turn fourteen (again). She refuses to believe that she is dead for a little while. Her story of how she comes to terms with her new life (in death) is really sweet, well-told and provocative. My only 'complaint' would be that it is written in third person present tense. I actually like reading a book written the way but it does strike you randomly sometimes and it detracts a little from the book. But you should definitely read it anyway!

I LOVE IT! It was a chilling mystery, involving a well-thought out plot of murder... I know how many books sound just like that, but what about 10 people found dead on an island they're all alone on? And don't think the last person just committed suicide... because the only explanation of other deaths would mean more people in the house(which there aren't any), or the dead coming back alive.

This book was SO great! It's the fifth and last book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I've been eagerly looking forward to its release for months and months and it has totally and completely lived up to what I expected. Now, I'm not going to summarize what the whole series about because I already have in other reviews. WARNING! SPOILERS!

This is a Harry Potter fanfiction. Correction: this is THE #1 Harry Potter fanfiction. It's about Andromeda, Bellatrix and Narcissa (Andy, Bella and Cissy) when they were kids. It's also about Sirius and his brother Regulus when they were kids. It starts when Andromeda is 11 years old, and goes all the way until she graduates from Hogwarts at 17. It shows Andromeda and Ted's romance, Bellatrix becoming evil, Sirius running away when he's 16, and a bunch of other really interesting stuff. Must read Harry Potter fanfic!!!!!!!

The Hotel Eden Stories: Ron Carlson

The Hotel Eden Stories is a book full of other stories. Each story is unique and special. Most of the stories in this book are for more mature readers. The story "Keith" is my favorite. I saw the movie before i read the book so i had a better picture of what everyone looked like. Seeing the movie before also helps you imagine what the characters are like. The actors did a great job.(by the way, Keith is an independent film directed by Todd Kessler) ANyway, Keith is a story about this girl who thinks she has her future all figured out. But when she gets paired up with Keith as lab partners. Her perspective of the whole world changes. Keith was rated PG-13 and i agree that the story should also be read by people around that age.

This is such a great book!!! It's about a girl named Jane who was part of the royal family, and lived in England. She was born on October in the year 1537, and died when she was just sixteen years old, on Febuary 12, 1554. It's a really really interesting and (especially at the end) sad book. They have it here at the library, so you can place a hold on it and read it. You will love it!!!!!!!!!!

Greek: It's a t.v. show about college students and their problems. I think it's one of the best shows on TV this month. To be honest with you, I just started watching this season because Jesse McCartney is guest starring. But I saw a couple of episodes last season and it was pretty good. I can only guess that it'll get better.

Ato the Giant Slayer: Ernest Antwi

The book is a good mixture of reality, fantasy, adventure and comedy. I have read a lot of books with magicians, fairies, demons etc in it, but this is the first time I have a read a book that has a 'wacky' angel in it. I like the fact that the hero is not an extraordinary person but is an everyday boy facing the same problems boys and girls face every day in their lives. I also like the fact that he is black and not white like in many books. One lesson I learned from this book is that if I am bold and courageous, I can do whatever I set my mind to do. I have to believe and have faith in myself. If I don't do that nobody can do that for me. The ending is very good. Although I knew the villains would be stopped, I did not know how and was quite surprised. I read the whole book in one day because I couldn't put it down. My favorite line is when Ato exclaims “Save the world? I am only seven! I can’t even save myself from the bullies at school. Now I have to save the wor! ld and kill giants? You are kidding me, right?” I think every one should read this book. My father bought mine from Author House. It is cheaper than on Amazon.

This book is amazing. It is the first of three books in the serise. The books get longer each one. It has all these mystical creatures. I usualy like historical fiction but this time i got a different book. It is historical fiction and fantasy. Although after you read Libba Bray's writing you might think it is all real.

A long way gone is a memoir about a 12 year old boy who had to flee his home because of the rebels. When he was 13 he had become a solider for the goverment army. He had been a solider for three years. This book is telling you all the bad things going on in the world right now. This book is verypowerful and very heart breaking. It’s defently not one of those books were its happy and teeneage joyfullness. It shows all the things that we dont know alot about and the book makes you want to learn more about whats happening in the world. Like others have said this book is very honest and I like that.I wouldnt recomend this book to anyone who doesnt like an intense & sad story.

Funny, sexy and addicting, Succubus Blues tells the story of Georgina Kincaid, a succubus living in Seattle. Throughout the book Georgina struggles against her demonic nature, her want for charming author Seth Mortensen, and tries to figure out what or who is killing other immortals in Seattle. Definitely for mature readers, but very good! I loved this book.

Helen of Troy: Margaret George

This book looks daunting at first (606 pages) but it's actually really good! It's about Helen of Troy and her whole life (it does leave her her abduction by Theseus). It is really nice to read Greek mythology from her view. It has a lot of great 'historical' details and some great imagination in what Helen would be feeling. It's a great book that'll really make Troy, and Helen and Paris and Menelaus and the rest of them, come alive for you. Enjoy!

IT: Stephen King

This book is about the town of Derry, Maine and the lives of kids, Ben, Bill, Mike, Beverly, Richard, Eddie, and Stanley, who uncover the true horror of Derry. Stephen King uses an interesting writing style throughout this book. He uses flashbacks to tell the story leading up to an event told at the beginning of the chapter. He also switches back and forth from when the the characters where kids and adults. All in all I thought this was a good book. It kept you wanting more by being suspenseful and exciting. I recommend this book to somebody who wants a good horror/thriller and a long read. This book is 1090 pages including the epilogue.

The book I read is a memoir by Ishmael Beah. He is really trying to get across that the world needs to know about all the dreadful thing s that happened in Sierra Leone and all the other places that there was genocide. I recommend this to all people who care about their fellow world citizens. It is the story of the author who you are traveling with the whole time. At first you are in his home village of Mogbwemo. Then you start the journey because they went out of town and while they were gone the rebels came to their home so they had to run away. Beah’s grandmother said “In the sky there are always answers and explanations for everything: every pain, every suffering, joy, and confusion. After the conflict he moved to New York and eventually went to Oberlin College. In the story it is more about the rebels but when we talk about refugees in class we talk about the people affected by things like that.

Little Brother: Allen Baillie

Little Brother is about a boy named vithy.In the beginning of the book all you get is him running with his brother from the soldiers,escaping from the work camp. But then more in the book you figure out slowly why and how he was in the work camp, and then towards the end he spills all the beans and tells everything.This story takes place in Cambodia.During the story he gets separted with his brother ~the only family member he got left.~ So he must search for him because the last thing his brother told him was "the border".Vithy must find his way to the brother also get thru soldiers wiuth out getting shot.In the end does Vithy find his brother? Does he make it to the border? Only you can find out by reading this book.I found this book very interseting I liked it.Its that kind of book where you can't put it down! Untill you leave at a chapter where he is in good hands and not in a total actionaro chapter.It overall a great book!

Making it Home: Beverley Naidoo

The book Making it Home has different stories about kids who are refugees, trying to make it to a new home. The stories were collected by Beverly Naidoo, but written by different children around the world. I really like this book because it gives you a sense of a refugee’s life. I think it is unfair that they are living in harsh conditions while we are living plentiful lives, where most of us have food, shelter, water and proper clothing and they barely have anything. For example, the story by Desaange Tandichabo from Congo is about a family who got caught up in a war that has been going on since 1996. Although they were able to escape, on the way one of her brothers was shot and they could not turn back to help him. Her mom and step dad live in Kindia, but her, her older brother, her other older brother and his wife and baby have to live in the camp for Internationally Displaced People (IDP). This is a good book and you should look into it because by knowing about refugees, you can do your part to make the world a better place. = )

A Long Way Gone: Ishmeal Beah

A Long Way Gone is not a book you can say you particularly enjoy. It is a book that is truly powerful and moving. It tells the truly startling and inhumane aspects of war that are so often ignored in the media. From it's gruesome beginning and middle to it's end it will let you understand the horror of child soldiers. In the body of the book Ishmeal talks constantly of the emotionally numb feeling he gets from the cocktail of drugs he took and needless killing. This is a true story and none of it is made up, which makes it all the more disturbing. In conclusion I suggest that all people read this book so they can truly understand what war is.

This story is about three little girls and their mom in the Congo getting caught-up in the civil war. The girls father comes home shot, their father tells them to leave immediately. When there is a war that gets out of control the people need to flee as soon as possible. That is what happened to this family. This story helped me understand the differences between people in the U.S and people in third world countries. The girls, Baba, Lou, Theres, and their Mother run away to Europe. When they arrive in Europe their baggage is gone and immigration control gives them a hard time. This is only one of the great stories of Give Me Shelter. If you like books that inspire and help you to feel for other people then you will love this book.

refugees(and no, it's not capitalized) is a fiction book, but based on real events. It's based around the time of the 9/11 attacks. A girl named Dawn runs away from her foster home to New York City. Meanwhile, there is a motherless boy named Johar who lives in a town in Afghanistan inhabited by the Taliban. When his brother is recruited to fight, and he must go to a refugee camp to avoid the same thing happening to him. He ends up traveling all over Pakistan, trying to find a safe place for him and his 3 year old cousin, Bija. Johar and Dawn are eventually connected when Dawn decides to call her foster mom, a doctor in the camp, and tell her she's in New York, and Johar, her translator, picks up.

Letters from Rifka: Karen Hesse

Letters from Rifka is the story of a twelve year old girl and the struggles she goes through as she tries to immigrate with her family to America. Having grown up in Berdichev, Russia, Rifka and her family must flee to save her brothers from joining the Russian army. Rifka must now leave everything she has ever known behind to escape the Russian soldiers and their harsh treatment of Jews. Karen Hesse tells the story through letters Rifka writes to her dear cousin Tovah. Throughout the book Rifka struggles through typhus, a deadly storm at sea, religious discrimination, and being separated from the people and places she loves most. This book is wonderfully written and truly shows the unfairness experienced by immigrants from the 1920’s, to today. The beginning is not the greatest, but the book gets better as it goes along. The author does a great job of connecting you to the characters, and making you understand the emotions they are feeling. I think one of the great ! aspects of the book is that at the beginning of each chapter it begins with a line of poetry from a book given to Rifka by her cousin Tovah. In that one line of poetry, it gives you a feeling of what the next chapter is about. In some parts of the book Rifka doubts if America is worth all the hardships she must endure. But she always manages to keep going. In a letter she wrote to her cousin she said, “In Russia, all America meant to me was excitement, adventure. Now, coming to America means so much more. It is not simply a place to go when you run away. America is a place to begin anew.” I think this is true in many ways. Letters from Rifka is a great book to read, although it is no at the top of my list for books I would recommend. It manages to say a lot in less then 150 pages, so I would definitely read it if you get the chance. It is probably best for ages ten and up. But I think all types of readers will enjoy it.
