As head of the Oregon Federal Public Defender's Office, Steven T. Wax represented inmates at Guantánamo and Brandon Mayfield, the Oregon lawyer falsely accused of terrorism. His book, Kafka Comes to America: Fighting for Justice in the War on Terror, looks at civil liberties since 9/11. Celebrate free speech at Central Library.

Fall Used Book Sale

Shop Oregon's biggest used book sale! The Friends of the Library will hold this fall's sale in the St. Johns neighborhood, at 8150 N. Lombard St. You'll find more than 100,000 books on virtually all subjects, CDs, DVDs and more, at prices starting as low as 50 cents. Proceeds benefit Multnomah County Library.

Visit the Collins Gallery and explore the richly evocative work of Bryan Collier, award-winning illustrator of many children's books. Collier, whose unique style incorporates watercolors, fabric, photographs and newsprint, believes that collage is "about how different elements relate to each other." Meet the artist October 23.
