A Kids' Tour of Central Library
What is a public library, anyway?
It's a big room filled with a bunch of books, and you have to be quiet, right?

Not exactly...
All you need to do is talk in your regular voice. We want you to visit and enjoy yourself. The library is a great place to learn and have fun.
Let's take a look at Central Library in downtown Portland.

Does Central Library have a lot of books?
Yes! It has over a million of them, and 17 miles of shelves to hold them. But even 17 miles of shelves isn't enough. Thousands of those books are checked out any time you visit. If they were all on the shelves at once, there wouldn't be room to hold them all.
And the library has more than books.
It also has cassette tapes and CDs to listen to, videotapes and DVDs to watch, magazines, newspapers and computer CD-ROMs to try on your computer at home.
