An Xuyen Bakery
5345 S.E. Foster Rd. [eat]
503.788.0866
Here you'll find fabulous but inexpensive pastries, savory and sweet. Pecan cookies, sweet bean filled pastries, bao (a steamed roll filled with meat) and pandan leaf bread are among the highlights. Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches (crispy bread and pickled vegetables, yum!) are available too, but you have to ask for them, they're not on the menu. An Xuyen doesn't have chairs or tables, but if you're ready to take your treats home, this is a bakery you shouldn't miss.

Gladstone Coffee
3813 S.E. Gladstone St. [relax]
503.775.1537
Although Portland is a city rife with coffee shops, some neighborhoods don't have such great coverage. Creston-Kenilworth residents can breathe a sigh of relief; there is now a relaxing coffee house right in the center of their 'hood. Gladstone Coffee offers big soft couches, homemade sweet treats, and of course, coffee that is taken seriously by staff and patrons alike. Thank goodness.
