October & November: Historic Zinesters Talking
Zines are an important part of Portland's literary heritage, and we don't want that history to be lost! This special series of events features long-time Portland zine-creators and enthusiasts discussing zine history and sharing their experiences with independent publishing and with promoting homegrown literature in Portland.
We invite Portland zinesters new and old as well as zine readers and local culture enthusiasts to come reminisce, discuss and celebrate our culture!
Tuesday, November 3, 6:30-7:45 p.m., Central Library
- Discuss the recent history of chapbooks, poetry and zines in Portland with Kevin Sampsell (co-author of Haiku Inferno; publisher, Future Tense Books; and small press champion, Powell's City of Books) and Leanne Grabel, poet (Lonesome and Very Quarrelsome Heroes, Short Poems by a Short Person), performer and teacher.
Both events in the Historic Zinesters Talking series will be recorded and cataloged in the library's podcast collection.
November 14: Keep Portland Weird Festival
Portland is a place of passionate people pursuing interesting, and sometimes strange, pastimes. Join us at Central Library on Saturday, November 14, noon-4 p.m. for a day of discovery as a wide variety of organizations share what they do and why they do it.
The list of weird groups and organizations is waaaay too long to detail here, but here's a sampling: You can learn about 3D photography with Cascade Stereoscopic Club, enthuse about knitting with the Portland Knitters Guild, enjoy a traditional dance performance by Renegade Rose Morris, and of course, ask for advice from Nicole J. Georges, America's Smartest Girl. Want to see the whole menu of weirdness? Take a look at the Keep Portland Weird Festival website.

. . . if you have an idea for a cool zine event you'd like to see at your local library, please let us know! Like to eavesdrop? Listen in on previous zine-related libary events in the library's podcast collection!
And remember, neighborhood libraries around Multnomah County are always hosting a variety of free entertaining and educational events book groups, author visits, craft classes, storytimes, and theater events, just to name a few. You should totally come!
